About the event:

Paid staff can make a significant contribution to the life of a person with disability – enabling the person to live a rich life and pursue their unique goals and dreams. What lies at the heart of the role is, however, frequently invisible. When we fall into the habit of talking about ‘hours’, tasks, routines, and schedules, it’s easy to be distracted from what really matters about supporting people well.

This two-part interactive workshop focuses on the values that underpin and drive support, with an emphasis on valued roles and community belonging:

The purpose of support work.
Values, beliefs and assumptions.
Getting to know the person.
Valued roles.
Promoting friendships and relationships.

Note: The content covered in this workshop is equivalent to Day 1 of our two-day face to face Getting to the Heart training. Day 2 content will next be offered in early 2025.

Participants must attend both sessions and complete brief tasks prior to each session. This is a participatory and live online workshop series, and as such will not be recorded.

What do I need for the workshops?

This is an interactive workshop! You will be asked questions and invited to share your ideas with other people.

You will need:

a computer or tablet device
internet access
speakers or headphone and a microphone
somewhere a bit quiet where you can concentrate

We do not recommend you join these workshops on a phone.

About the Presenters:

Our experienced disability consultants and presenters bring a wealth of experience in supporting people with disability and families in their efforts towards a good and ordinary life.

The content of our workshops is brought to life through the sharing of examples and personal stories that illustrate how the ideas can be implemented.

Who Should Attend?

This training is for support workers who are directly assisting a person with disability to live a good life in community.

The online workshop is participatory with lots of opportunities to engage in activities – participants are expected to use their microphone and keep their video on.

If you or your organisation wants to register more than four workers, please contact CRU to discuss this.

What do I need to participate?

CRU will be using Zoom meetings as a platform. To participate you will need:

a computer, tablet or smart phone with internet access
speakers/sound
a microphone and video camera are not essential but will be helpful for your participation

Event details

This workshop will be held via a Zoom Session and log-in details will be sent to participants who register a few days prior to the event.
Log-in will be available 15 minutes prior to each event commencing.

Learning Objectives

Identify the elements of a good life and consider how this concept relates to people with disability.
Reflect on assumptions about people with disabilities’ right to and the possibility of a good life.
Begin to develop a framework for thinking about and reflecting on the role of a support worker in their own particular contexts.
Appreciate the importance of knowing the person well and taking a strengths-based approach.
Be introduced to Valued Social Roles and appreciate how the concept can be used to support people to have access to the good things of life.
Understand the importance of friendships and relationships and Identify strategies that make belonging in community more likely.
Contrast the things that can help facilitate roles and relationships for people with disability with those things that may get in the way.
Be provided with a framework for evaluating support.
