About the event:

With clear strategies and intentions, a paid worker can assist the person they are supporting to build a good, ordinary and meaningful life in community. Greater Depth in Support Work* extends on the foundations covered in Part One Getting to the Heart of What Matters (Introduction to Effective Support Work).

This course extends on concepts of relationship and community building, and covers some of the complexities of support work, such as dilemmas in supporting people to make their own choices, and assisting people to develop skills and competencies.

*Please note this course was previously known as Getting to the Heart of What Matters Day Two.

Participants must attend both sessions and complete brief tasks prior to each session. This is a participatory and live online workshop, and as such will not be recorded.

Effective working relationships with people with disability and families
Extending relationship and community building
Identifying places of welcome
Developing skills and competencies
Supporting people to make choices

About the Presenters:

Our experienced disability consultants and presenters bring a wealth of experience in supporting people with disability and families in their efforts towards a good and ordinary life.

The content of our workshops is brought to life through the sharing of examples and personal stories that illustrate how the ideas can be implemented.

Who Should Attend?

This training is for support workers who are directly assisting a person with disability to live a good life in community.

A prerequisite for this course is to have completed Getting to the Heart of What Matters Part 1 (or

equivalent).

The online workshop is participatory with lots of opportunities to engage in activities – participants are expected to use their microphone and keep their video on.

If you or your organisation wants to register more than four workers, please contact CRU to discuss this.

What do I need for the workshop?

This is an interactive workshop! You will be asked questions and invited to share your ideas with other people.

To participate you will need:

a computer or tablet
internet access
speakers or headphones and a microphone
somewhere a bit quiet where you can concentrate

Event details

These workshops will be held via Zoom Sessions and log-in details will be sent to participants who register a few days prior to the event.
Log-in will be available 15 minutes prior to each event commencing.

Learning Objectives

Be introduced to the ‘Five Valued Experiences’ as a framework for support work.
Analyse the complex nature of choice & decision-making for people with disability and
develop practical strategies for assisting people to make their own choices.
Discern ‘real’ community from misrepresentations of community and consider our
communities to start identifying places with potential for welcome and inclusion.
Explore the nature of effective working relationships between support workers, the
people they support and their families.
Appreciate how community development approaches can be used to help people to
connect and build relationships with people in the community.
Understand the support worker’s role in developing people’s skills / competencies /
capacity.
Review the ‘Role of a Support Worker’ and ‘Five Valued Accomplishments’
frameworks.
