    Event description

This webinar will cover what it is like going all-electric for both existing and new homes across Australia.

Join experts from Renew and CHOICE, as well as Sustainable House Day homeowner Michelle Stephens to learn more about how and when to transition away from gas, tips on creating an efficient all-electric home and the benefits environmentally and economically.

You’ll hear about various technologies on different areas of houses that commonly require transitioning (including space heating, water heating and cooking), as well as about research conducted on performance and efficiency of different solar panels and other household appliances.

There will also be plenty of time for questions, with a Q&A panel discussion at the end.

Please note that registered participants will be sent a link to this online panel discussion 2 days prior to, as well as on the day of the event.

This panel discussion is being presented as part of Sustainable House Day’s Extension Series.

    Speakers

    Chris Barnes, CHOICE

Chris has a background in science and technology and manages the household category of product testing at CHOICE. This includes the household appliance and whitegoods teams, who cover a long list of products, as well as his own personal focus area of solar and energy. Chris is also involved with standards committees for air conditioners and often liaises with government and industry in areas such as product safety and regulation.

Chris enjoys the diversity of his work at CHOICE, and exercising both sides of his brain. To Chris there is nothing better than diving into a stack of technical data and turning it into useful, readable information!

Michelle Stephenson, Sustainable House Day homeowner

Michelle has been a passionate advocate for sustainable living for many years. She made the tree change from Melbourne to Central Victoria 15 years ago and more recently embarked in further study, completing a Diploma in Sustainable Landscape Design.

Michelle has been driven by a purpose to change the way we live to be more sympathetic to the environmental, social and economic needs being in balance. She has leveraged her corporate career working in organisational change management, consulting in the waste recycling industry and running her small sustainability consultancy to drive social change through education. She has done this through successfully establishing the Plastic Bag Free Daylesford campaign and designing and building her own sustainable home.

By embarking on these changes herself, she wants to share what she has learnt to demonstrate how we can all make changes - big or small.

    MC: Jenny Edwards

Jenny Edwards is the owner of Light House Architecture and Science, a multi-award-winning business with 15 staff that integrates science with the architectural process to deliver highly efficient, climate resilient homes in the ACT region.

She is not an architect. Jenny has a Masters degree in science and is an ACT licensed Building Energy Efficiency Assessor. She’s been doing theoretical testing of designs using thermal performance simulation software, and physical building-envelope testing of built projects, since 2009 (and is very proud of her thermal camera and blower door).

With over 100 projects in Canberra, Light House has demonstrated there is growing demand for smaller, smarter, ALL-ELECTRIC sustainable housing.

In 2019, Jenny was awarded the Clem Cummings Medal by the ACT Institute of Architects in recognition of her contributions to architecture and the built environment. Jenny is very big on walking the talk and advocating for evidence-based home design.
