Description

Girraween BioBlitz – Saturday Afternoon Butterfly Walk

Join fauna ecologist Chris Sanderson from BAAM for an afternoon of butterfly searching as we tackle one of Girraween National Park's most iconic landmarks — the famous Pyramid.

The group will climb the Pyramid to search for hilltopping butterflies, a fascinating behaviour where butterflies congregate at prominent high points in the landscape. This is a great opportunity to explore Girraween's butterfly diversity while learning from Chris about the species we encounter and their ecology.

The Pyramid provides a spectacular setting for butterfly watching, and spring is an exciting time to be out looking for these beautiful insects. Bring your curiosity, your camera and your eyes peeled for butterflies moving through the vegetation and gathering around the summit.

When: Saturday 17 October 2026, 1:30–4:30 pm
Leader: Chris Sanderson, Fauna Ecologist, BAAM
Meeting point: Girraween Day Use Area https://maps.app.goo.gl/V1sfLbL1dWVLxNSaA

Please note: This is a reasonably strenuous walk involving a significant climb up the Pyramid. Participants will need a high degree of fitness and should be comfortable walking uphill over uneven and rocky terrain. Please ensure you bring plenty of water and wear sturdy footwear suitable for the climb.

Please also bring plenty of water, sun protection, a hat and appropriate clothing for the weather. Afternoon conditions on the Granite Belt can still change quickly, so come prepared for both sun and cooler conditions.

Accommodation: Accommodation is not provided as part of the Girraween BioBlitz. Camping is available at the Girraween Camping Area, but availability is currently limited due to drought conditions, so we recommend booking early. A range of other accommodation options to suit different budgets is available in Stanthorpe and the surrounding area.
