Description

Saturday Morning Bird Walk

Come and discover some of Girraween National Park’s amazing avian diversity during the spring breeding season, with bird guru Mel Whitby.

This early-morning walk is a great opportunity to explore Girraween’s unique habitats and learn more about the birds that call the Granite Belt home. With birds particularly active in the cool early morning, you never know what we might find.

Will you spot the stunning turquoise parrot or track down the elusive chestnut-rumped heathwren? There will be plenty of other birds to discover along the way, whether you’re an experienced birder or simply keen to learn more about Girraween’s wildlife.

When: Saturday 17 October 2026, 6:00–8:30 am
Leader: Mel Whitby
Meeting point: Girraween Day Use Area. https://maps.app.goo.gl/NGx5z8P3Mxiznvei8

Please wear sturdy, comfortable footwear and dress appropriately for the weather. Early mornings on the Granite Belt can be very cold, even in October, so bring plenty of warm clothing. Binoculars are highly recommended if you have them.

The walk will finish at approximately 8:30 am, after which you are welcome to join us for a hot breakfast before taking part in some of the other Girraween BioBlitz activities.

Accommodation: Accommodation is not provided as part of the Girraween BioBlitz. Camping is available at the Girraween Camping Area, but availability is currently limited due to drought conditions, so we recommend booking early. A range of other accommodation options to suit different budgets is available in Stanthorpe and the surrounding area.

Please remember that wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed, but we’ll keep our eyes and ears open for whatever Girraween has to offer!
