Girraween BioBlitz – Saturday Morning Crayfish & Turtle Survey

Join ecologist and conservationist Ollie Scully for a morning exploring Girraween National Park's freshwater habitats in search of crayfish, turtles and other aquatic wildlife.

Girraween is home to Euastacus suttoni, commonly known as Sutton's Spiny Crayfish — a large and rare freshwater crustacean found only in the cool upland streams along the border of southern Queensland and northern New South Wales. This fascinating species is one of the special inhabitants of Girraween's waterways and provides an excellent opportunity to learn more about the park's unique freshwater ecosystems.

During the survey, Ollie will lead participants in searching for Sutton's Spiny Crayfish, turtles and other aquatic species, while sharing his knowledge of their ecology, identification and conservation. We'll explore the waterways and look at the animals that live in and around these cool upland streams.

Whether you're interested in freshwater ecology, crustaceans, reptiles or simply keen to discover another side of Girraween's biodiversity, this is a great opportunity to get out into the field and learn more about the species living in the park's waterways.

Please wear sturdy, comfortable footwear and dress appropriately for the weather. Bring plenty of water, as well as sun protection and a hat. The survey may involve walking near or through waterways and uneven natural terrain, so footwear suitable for wet conditions is recommended.

The survey will finish at approximately 12:30 pm, after which you are welcome to join us for lunch before taking part in some of the other Girraween BioBlitz activities.

Accommodation: Accommodation is not provided as part of the Girraween BioBlitz. Camping is available at the Girraween Camping Area, but availability is currently limited due to drought conditions, so we recommend booking early. A range of other accommodation options to suit different budgets is available in Stanthorpe and the surrounding area.
