Girraween BioBlitz – Saturday Night Reptile Spotlighting

Join Rhett Dodd from Barung Landcare for an evening of reptile spotlighting in Girraween National Park, with a particular focus on the park's fascinating diversity of geckoes.

Girraween's granite formations and surrounding woodland habitats provide an amazing range of environments for reptiles, including a remarkable diversity of geckoes. As darkness falls, we'll head out with torches to search for reptiles becoming active after sunset and discover some of the species that call Girraween home.

Rhett will share his knowledge of the local reptiles and help participants identify the species we encounter, while discussing their ecology and the habitats they depend on. Night-time spotlighting provides a completely different perspective on Girraween's wildlife and is a great way to discover some of the smaller and more elusive inhabitants of the park.

Please wear sturdy, comfortable footwear and dress appropriately for the weather. Nights on the Granite Belt can be very cold, even in October, so bring plenty of warm clothing. A torch or headlamp is essential, and we recommend bringing spare batteries if needed.

The walk will involve walking through natural areas at night and may include uneven or rocky terrain. Please follow the instructions of the event leader and take care when moving around in low-light conditions.

Accommodation: Accommodation is not provided as part of the Girraween BioBlitz. Camping is available at the Girraween Camping Area, but availability is currently limited due to drought conditions, so we recommend booking early. A range of other accommodation options to suit different budgets is available in Stanthorpe and the surrounding area.
