Description

Girraween BioBlitz – Sunday Morning Quoll Trapping

Join us for a rare, hands-on conservation experience in Girraween National Park, working with one of Australia’s most elusive predators — the spotted-tailed quoll.

As part of the Girraween BioBlitz, we’ll check traps set for spotted-tailed quolls and, if we are lucky enough to find one, participants will have the opportunity to see and learn about the processing of a wild quoll. This work contributes to important research and conservation efforts to protect quolls in southern Queensland.

Our morning fieldwork will involve checking traps, safely processing any quolls captured and assisting with research activities, including the fitting of collars where appropriate. This monitoring is particularly important for understanding and managing emerging threats such as sarcoptic mange, which has the potential to significantly impact quoll populations.

When: Sunday 18 October 2026, 6:00–8:30 am

Leader: Paul Revie, Quoll Society of Australia

Meeting point: Girraween Day Use Area https://maps.app.goo.gl/NRfY62ZFhKV4dyEKA

Please come prepared for cold conditions. Even in October, temperatures on the Granite Belt can drop into the single digits. Bring plenty of warm clothing and dress appropriately for spending the morning outdoors.

Fieldwork will finish at approximately 8:30 am, after which you are welcome to join us for an outdoor breakfast before taking part in some of the other Girraween BioBlitz activities.

Accommodation: Accommodation is not provided as part of the Girraween BioBlitz. Camping is available at the Girraween Camping Area, but availability is currently limited due to drought conditions, so we recommend booking early. A range of other accommodation options to suit different budgets is available in Stanthorpe and the surrounding area.

Please remember that wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed. All quoll handling and research activities will be conducted by appropriately trained personnel, with participant involvement subject to the needs of the animals and the research program.
