Gladstone Wheelwrighting Experience
Event description
Join us for a bespoke heritage experience at The Wheelwright Hub!
The Wheelwright Hub specialises in traditional wooden-wheel and carriage building. We are based in Gladstone, a thriving rural district in the Wairarapa - not far from the Gladstone Pub!
The Wheelwright Hub was established in 1994 by Greg & Ali Lang, and is now the last remaining wheelwright business in New Zealand. Greg and Ali are passionate about preserving this unique part of Aotearoa's heritage, as well as the art and craftsmanship skills required for future generations. Join them for a behind-the-scenes tour as part of the 2024 Wellington Heritage Festival.
This event includes:
- A guided tour of the workshop and current restoration projects (from horse-drawn to railway and beyond!)
- Learn about the skills and techniques required to build, conserve & restore wooden-body vehicles and wooden wheels.
- A talk on the history of The Wheelwright Hub, and plans for the future.
- Participate in a hands-on 'wheel-tyring' experience over the open fire.
- Photo opportunities with unique heritage vehicles.
- A Q&A session with your hosts Greg & Ali.
Note this tour takes place in an active workshop. Participants will receive a safety briefing on arrival, and adhere to instructions from the hosts. Please wear closed footwear, and bring warm clothing as the tour will involve an outdoor component.
A coffee caravan will be available onsite for light refreshments.
There are three tour times to choose from. If this tour is sold out, please check our profile for other timeslots.
