Flameworked Icicles and Ornament Workshop
Description
In this beginner friendly workshop, we will use gas torches to melt crystal clear borosilicate class and add color to create hanging ornaments that have unique patterns and special effects. The focus will be on making several types of hanging icicles with beautiful curves and elegant shape. Other types of hanging ornaments will also be demonstrated, such as a star. Instruction will be provided on safety, how to work with hot glass, add color, and shape it into a graceful icicle 4-6 inches in size. Your creations will be annealed in a kiln after class and be ready for you to pick up in about a week. Or, you have the option to skip the annealing and take your art home at the end of class.
Your instructor, Steve Bay, is a glass artist that creates sculpture and jewelry using flameworking and fusing (@stevebayglass). Steve applies his marine biology background to capture the beauty and remarkable design of nature in his art. Class size is limited to six persons to ensure personal attention from the instructor. Participants must be at least 14 years of age. For safety, please wear only cotton clothing, long pants, and closed toe shoes during the class. Long hair should be secured away from the face. - Is this class suitable for beginners?
Absolutely! Prior experience is helpful, but not required. The most important thing to is to have a desire to learn something new and love glass art.
- What is Angels Gate Cultural Center?
Angels Gate Cultural Center (AGCC) emerged from a group of San Pedro artists in the 1970s, who created artist studios and exhibition space within the 1940’s-era Army barracks of Angels Gate Park.
In 1982, AGCC was established as a nonprofit, committed to serving the Los Angeles Harbor Region with year-round contemporary art exhibitions, cultural events, community classes, and arts education.
- How do I get to the cultural center?
AGCC is located at 3601 S Gaffey St in San Pedro. Please note that the center is not located directly on Gaffey St, but on an access road to the West. Go south on Gaffey and turn right at the first road past 36th St. Then turn right immediately at the large signpost and drive to the top of the hill to enter the cultural center complex. Classroom G is a large building across the parking lot with a large "G" on the side.
