Join fellow global citizens, inspiring activists and unlikely champions of our natural environment as we celebrate World Environment Day 2020!

Experts have claimed that COVID-19 restrictions have presented an opportunity to reset our environmental future. While we have seen some short term benefits such as a drop in emissions, air and water quality improvements in many areas and images of animals coming out to breed and play. We know that those living in extreme poverty are affected disproportionately by the climate crisis, but we must be careful about claiming an environmental win amongst the tragedy of COVID-19. The situation is still unfolding, and much will depend on what we do next.

GUEST SPEAKERS //

Jack River

Jack River is the moniker of Holly Rankin, the songwriter, producer and climate activist making grit and glitter fuelled music for the revolution. Following the release of her ARIA-nominated debut record Sugar Mountain, and her Peking Duk collaboration - Sugar, River has toured extensively playing to sold-out headline shows around the country. Kicking off the new decade by releasing a follow-up EP Stranger Heart with neon-lit singles Later Flight and Dark Star, she will also be taking her captivating show on a tour of North America later this year.

In between touring and recording, she is the mastermind behind Grow Your Own Festival in her hometown of Forster which celebrates music, art, food and agriculture of the region.

Andy Ridley

Andy is recognised as one of the world’s most successful environmental movement creators. As co-founder and CEO of Earth Hour, he grew the campaign from an idea on the back of a beer coaster in Sydney to the world’s largest environmental action, spanning 7,000 cities in over 164 countries, and reaching more than 2.8 billion people globally. Inspired by a conversation between Sir David Attenborough and Barack Obama, Andy has turned his focus to a new challenge, creating a 21st-century ocean conservation organisation, Citizens of the Great Barrier Reef. The program aims to aid the protection and conservation of the Great Barrier Reef and reefs all over the world, using tech, data and a new collaborative approach to conservation.

Before founding both Citizens of the Great Barrier Reef and Earth Hour, Andy led the rapid growth and evolution of Circle Economy in Amsterdam. He believes the circular economy provides many of the answers to some of the biggest environmental challenges that we face as the global population grows beyond nine billion, and we attempt to address our greatest generational challenge of climate change.

Misha Coleman

Misha commenced working in climate policy in 1997 at AusAID/DFAT where she was involved in developing a government position to take to the Kyoto negotiations. She has also worked in several developing countries in health-related capacities including as the Health Advisor to Care Australia in Vietnam during the Avian Influenza pandemic. Holding a Masters Degree in Environmental Law, Misha has previously led the Australian Government's agricultural science department at the Australian Embassy in Vietnam.

Misha now leads the Global Health Alliance Australia - a peak body representing 48 global health organisations and is the Mayor of the City of Yarra, an inner suburb Melbourne council that will shortly release its first Climate Emergency Plan under her leadership.

Misha was invited to discuss the health impacts of climate change with Federal MPs and Senators at the launch of the re-established Parliamentary Friends of Climate Action in October 2019, and she looks forward to hearing your views too!
