Duration: 2hrs (1hr of content presentation, followed by 1hr of breakout room discussions and feedback sessions) 

OBJECTIVE:

Equip Council Members with an understanding of the key components of an effective principal appointment, review and appraisal process, and the tools to carry out a fair and effective appraisal.  

1. Principal Appointment 

An outline of the principal appointment process in LCAQD, and the involvement and delegations in the process: 

  • District Church Board 
  • LEQ Milton Office – CLEQ & Secretariat 
  • School and College Councils 

2. The Purpose of the Appraisal Process 

How does the appraisal process enhance the School or College’s ministry and community? 

How does the process align the principal’s performance with the School or College’s strategic plan and mission intent? 

3. Accountability 

What are the elements of clear criteria and objectives to ensure that the appraisal process aligns with the School or College’s strategic plan and mission intent? 

What sort of appraisal cycle is fair to all stakeholders, and achieves this desired accountability? 

Is there a place for informal appraisals? 

4. Transparency 

How do you establish a process that is: 

  • fair and free of bias; 
  • guided and expeditious;  
  • takes into account, and engages with, the views of relevant stakeholders; and 
  • transparently involves all of School or College Council in the process? 

5. Benchmarking and Data 

What tools are available to identify benchmarks for salary and fringe benefits such as vehicles and sabbatical? 

What tools are available to collect relevant views of relevant stakeholders? 

How do you use these tools effectively in a tailored way for your School or College’s specific context? How do you interpret the data collected and apply it to the appraisal? 

6. Difficult Conversations 

How can a school or college council positively approach the following situations: 

  • A school or college council that is unhappy with the performance of a principal 
  • Active review and conversations during the probation period 
  • Complaints made by a member of the school or college community against a principal
