Develop your dermoscopy skills at our upcoming workshop hosted by Melanoma Institute Australia.
Dermoscopy is an invaluable tool for General Practitioners, offering a detailed assessment of skin lesions in everyday practice.
This introductory workshop is designed for General Practitioners who are new to dermoscopy or looking to build confidence in skin lesion assessment, with a focus on its role in diagnosing and monitoring melanoma in general practice.
Participants will build confidence by gaining foundational knowledge and practical skills in identifying structures and distinguishing skin lesions, including melanoma, through the “Chaos and clues” algorithm, as well as identifying common benign entities.
Our workshop will also integrate essential aspects of dermatopathology, enriching participants' knowledge and enhancing their ability to interpret dermoscopic findings effectively.
The program also includes an overview of diagnosing lentigo maligna and the role that confocal imaging plays in the diagnostic and referral pathway for complex lesions.
Participants will also have the opportunity to win a HEINE Dermatoscope to kickstart their skin cancer medicine career.
Please note: This workshop is designed for General Practitioners and provides a foundational introduction to dermoscopy. Due to popular demand, it is a repeat of the session held on 21 March 2026.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:
Explain the process and benefits for evaluating skin lesions under dermoscopy in general practice.
Identify common benign and malignant skin lesions using clinical and dermoscopic features.
Discuss the role of reflectance confocal microscopy in skin cancer diagnosis and identify appropriate indications for referral.
Select appropriate biopsy techniques and recognise common pitfalls in specimen handling to optimise diagnostic outcomes.

Lineup
A/Prof Paul Fishburn
Paul is a Skin Cancer Doctor based at Norwest Skin Cancer Centre in Sydney. He has a teaching appointment at The University of Queensland and is a co-author of the Australian Cancer Council Guidelines on the management of melanoma and keratinocyte skin cancers.
Dr Christene Mikhail
Christene is a Skin Cancer Doctor at a number of clinics in Sydney, including Norwest Skin Cancer Centre, and is a Senior Lecturer in UQ’s Master of Medicine (Skin Cancer) program.
Dr Lachlan Byth
Lachlan is a Dermatologist who has clinics at the dermatology practice at Melanoma Institute Australia and Northern Sydney Dermatology & Laser. In addition to earning a Doctor of Medicine, he also holds a Master of Public Health in Epidemiology.
Dr Nigel Maher
Nigel is an Anatomical Pathologist at Melanoma Institute Australia, with post-fellowship training in melanocytic pathology. Prior to training in anatomical pathology, Nigel worked in clinical dermatology practices and undertook a Master of Philosophy degree at the University of Sydney, gaining experience in reflectance confocal microscopy and optical coherence tomography.
