Online workshop series – The partnership between GPs and Community Palliative Care Services, in caring for palliative patients in the community.

Session 4: The role of the GP in prescribing opioids for palliative care patients.  

This session will provide GPs with information about opioids currently available in Australia, and will describe their use in patients with palliative care needs to manage distressing symptoms, such as pain and dyspnoea. The selection considerations of specific opioids for individual patients will also be discussed, along with medico-legal aspects of opioid prescriptions. This session aims to attain best outcomes for palliative patients by supporting GPs to make informed decisions when asked to prescribe these medications.
