DANIEL TOWNSEND & WE MAVERICKS IN CONCERT
Presented by the Illawarra Folk Club & Wollongong City Diggers under the sponsorship of Great Southern Nights

DANIEL TOWNSEND

An AFMA-nominated songwriter and inimitable poet, Daniel J Townsend has developed a reputation as one of Australia’s most engaging and inspiring folk performers. His latest record, The Eye Begins to See, is an exquisite song cycle about grief and renewal, produced by renowned mandolinist Luke Plumb.
The first songwriter in the world to release an album as a podcast, Townsend has performed at folk festivals all over the country, including The National, Nannup, Darwin, Major’s Creek, Tablelands, Fleurieu and Cygnet, with countless shows in bars, clubs and living rooms across the country.
His 2021 record, Broken Voices and The Eyes of Men is a combination of spoken-word performance and music, with a stage show incorporating still image videos from diverse artists. He co-wrote 2020’s Songs From The Great Pause with fans during the first COVID lockdown, and released his very popular celebration of Tasmania’s favourite highway, Midland Highway: The Musical the same year. A Tale of Two Cities (2019) was famously released as a podcast; World Until Yesterday (2016) was praised as "new and notable" by NoiseTrade, and his 2014 debut Iscariot was described by RN’s Inside Sleeve as "incredible."

He has published three books, including ‘Faxes to a Young Songwriter’ and a poetry anthology, ‘An Uncertain Shore’. He facilitates workshops in songwriting and poetry for schools and community groups, co-hosts Kunanyi Folk Club, mentors young songwriters and poets, and even hosts a fortnightly song circle in his nipaluna/Hobart home.

WE MAVERICKS

Masters in the art of connection, Lindsay Martin (AU) and Victoria Vigenser (NZ) interweave effortless strings, soulful vocals and driving rhythms to form a singular, intense musical voice. The couple have been called contemporary folk, alt-country and acoustic pop, but words don’t capture their unbelievable musical kinship, or the deeply heartfelt way they relate to their audiences.
This troubadour duo have an inexplicable appeal that has seen them on a steep rise to countless festival billings, nominated both “Artist of the Year” in the Australian Folk Music Awards and New Zealand's "Best Folk Artist", plus selection as showcase artists at Folk Alliance International.
They are currently touring their debut album “Grief’s a Gardener”, soon to tour the UK and EU with their sophomore release.

“He has a familiar soft folk tenor. She has a strong ringing tone with muscle behind a clear crystalline voice… The violin cries for her and the harmony vocals are divine… We Mavericks are a serendipitous pairing…” 13th Floor, NZ

“… the glorious harmonies and touching melodies of We Mavericks…Together they craft exquisite folk music, evoking spirits originating from Appalachia to Alba” Ambient Light, NZ
