Description

We're aiming to create a biolink - habitat for Greater Gliders - in the land between, and around, the Tallarook Forest and Mt Disappointment Forest.

We're particularly looking for private land owners between the two forests, or who live near these forests, who'd like to take part in the project. However, all people are welcome to attend the workshop.

This workshop is organised by BEAM Mitchell Environment Group as part of the Murchison Gap Greater Glider Biolink Project, a joint project with Biolinks Alliance.

This is the second of three workshops which will showcase what BEAM and Biolinks Alliance have found out about glider behaviour in these two forests, and the land in between, after six years of surveying for them. This workshop has been organised with the support of Upper Plenty Merri Catchments Landcare Group.

The workshop will be held at Kate Toogood's property, to the south-west of Mt Disappointment Forest. It has an area of forest which could be suitable habitat for Greater Gliders.

Greater Gliders live in hollows in eucalypts, eat only eucalyptus leaves, and like to mostly stay high in the tree canopy. But which eucalypts do they prefer to eat the leaves of, where can they best find hollows, and how high do they prefer? Do nestboxes work for them?

Paul Macgregor from BEAM will lead the workshop, outlining the results of the Greater Glider research that BEAM and Biolinks Alliance have carried out since 2020, and pointing to the ways we can help these nationally endangered animals to survive in the face of multiple threats to their future survival. Paul has been BEAM's project lead for the Murchison Gap Greater Glider Biolink Project.

Kate Toogood, a committee member of Upper Plenty Merri Catchments Landcare Group, will then lead a tour of the property with Paul, talking about how Greater Gliders could be encouraged to live in her forest.

The workshop is funded by the Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority through the 2025-26 round of the Victorian Landcare Grants.
