Greening Gunning: Bushland Restoration Event

Date: 9 November
Time: 9 AM to 12 PM restoration session, followed by lunch (catered by Queer Food) from 12 PM to 1 PM
Location: Gunning Showgrounds Bushland Park (Copeland Street entrance)
Free Transport: Transport from Canberra. A bus will depart from Meridian ACT (in Turner) at 8:30 AM and return to Meridian ACT by 1:00 PM

Join us for a rewarding day of bushcare at the Gunning Showgrounds Bushland Park, a beautiful 2.2-hectare area of Box Gum Grassy Woodland, classified as an Endangered Ecological Community. This park is a testament to the incredible work of Gunning District Landcare, which has transformed a previously neglected bush block into a vibrant ecological park, featuring wheelchair-accessible paths and a communal yarning circle.

Our goal for the day is to remove invasive weeds that threaten the native flora, particularly in a section of the park where we have identified thriving populations of chocolate lilies, golden everlastings, Microlaena, and wallaby grass. By targeting weeds like Phalaris, known for its allelopathic properties that suppress the growth of other plants, we aim to enhance the natural regeneration of this vital habitat.

In addition to weeding, we will celebrate the vital role of pollinators by planting local native flowering plants, providing them with food and habitat in our Box Gum Grassy Woodlands.

The event will run from 9 AM to 12 PM, and we encourage everyone to stay for a free lunch and take this opportunity to mingle with fellow community members.
