Tue, 29 Sep, 5pm - 6:30pm AWSTGuest academic Associate professor Leah Heiss is the Eva and Marc Besen International Research Chair in Design at Monash University; Chair of the Victorian Premier’s Design Awards; Co-chair of the Victorian Heart Institute New Technologies working group; and designer in Residence at the Australian National Fabrication Facility. Leah is a leader in human centred design and co-design for technologies, systems and services for healthcare. Leah will share a range of projects and detail how her own PhD established a platform for collaboration across disciplines between Design and science improving health care outcomes, detailing how she makes the case for the value and impact of design in transdisciplinary projects with colleagues from the “Hard sciences”.

Wed, 30 Sep, 4:30pm - 5:30pm AWSTThis workshop examines generative AI's growing role in the research process — from literature synthesis and transcription to coding and iterative drafting. Rather than treating AI as simply helpful or simply risky, we'll look closely at where it genuinely strengthens research work, and where it can quietly distort findings, interpretations, or authorship without anyone noticing until much later. Through real examples and open discussion, HDR students will explore practical questions: When does AI assistance sharpen rigor, and when does it erode it? How do we retain ownership of our thinking? The session aims to build critical, confident practices for using AI as a research instrument, not a replacement for judgement.

Through industry perspectives, research insights and case study highlights, the forum will explore connections between sustainability ambition, project feasibility and precinct-to-corridor planning. Interactive panel discussions and audience Q&A will support exchange across research and practice, while Pecha Kucha presentations from project PhD candidates will highlight investigations into key challenges and opportunities. The hybrid event concludes with a networking lunch and further doctoral research presentations.
