Guniwaya Ngigu (We Fight)
Event description
Hello Friends, for our July screening we’d like to present the incredible, Guniwaya Ngigu (or, We Fight!). set against a backdrop of the aptly dubbed “Stolenwealth Games” of 1982 – in what became a lightning rod moment of Blak resistance against entrenched colonial oppression. Captured through the lens of Gomeroi filmmaker Madeline McGrady, a self taught cinematic pioneer, who’s joined behind the camera by the renowned Tracey Moffatt. Together, evocatively framing the movement and some of its most prominent voices such Aunty Shirley Peisley and Dr Gary Foley.
Thousands of demonstrators mobilised within Kurilpa Lands to the side of Aboriginal and Torres Strait communities, who led the fight opposing brazenly apartheid legislations and fiercely advocating LAND BACK. Adversely, the state of so-called Queensland, summoned each inch of its immoral power to squash protestors and criminalise them. Though no policy or cop could deter those who marched in their thousands, who occupied Musgrave Park under banners of Land Rights, Reparations and Justice. Not a single beat is missed by McGrady and her crew, who vividly depict the movement in its fullness, elation and rage. Bounded and twisted within this long fight against colonial tyranny.
