Hajar, Like Badger

"A well-executed, heartfelt debut.” - The QR

British-Iranian stand-up, singer and Channel 4 Secret Genius finalist Hajar J Woodland brings her debut solo hour to Manchester - a musical comedy about the voice she wasn’t allowed to have.

Raised in a Muslim household where singing on stage was forbidden, she became a professional singer anyway – performing for footballers and finance bros while chasing the kind of love Dawson’s Creek and 90s romcoms promised her. Blending stand-up, original songs and state-school nostalgia, Hajar, Like Badger explores faith, identity and teenage romantic idealism. Expect a bold, heartfelt debut about rebellion, belonging and finding your voice. Probably no badgers.

“Ultimately feelgood... lovely blend of song and autobiographical stand-up” - The Scotsman

"Woodland's accounts are evocative, eloquent and told with good humour." - Chortle

"Bursting with musicality and an immensely likeable stage presence, Woodland reclaims the voice she was once told to hide, delivering an hour that is as resonant as it is entertaining.” - The QR

"She’s a born entertainer, whether singing about the 90s or dissecting her own name, bursting with musicality and enthusiasm.” - Funny Women
