Hamish Smith (New York)
Event description
Award-winning New Zealand-born Jazz artist, Hamish Smith, has quickly become one of the most in-demand bassists on the New York jazz scene and has been described by NEA Jazz Master, Todd Barkan, as âa modern marvel - one of the great young bassists in the world.â Hamish has performed and toured the world with an astonishing list of artists including Paquito DâRivera, Miguel Zenon, Alex Sipiagin, Manuel Valera, Rotem Sivan, Henry Hey, Yosvany Terry, Dayna Stephens, Michael Rodriguez, and Zach Brock, to name a few. His rhythmic inventiveness and unique groove-centric approach can be heard on nearly a dozen recordings that have been released on prominent labels such as Criss Cross, Sunnyside, and Greenleaf. Hamish also leads and composes for his own quintet, featuring some of the most innovative voices of his generation, and has been featured as a leader at The Jazz Gallery in New York. He is also a founding member of the collaborative quartet, Immigrantet, along with saxophonist Nicola Caminiti and vibraphonist Juan Diego Villalobos.
Tonight's concert marks a special occasion that Hamish will perform in Christchurch for the first time since 2022, when he last performed at the 03 Sessions. The group will perform original compositions and arrangements from the pool of Smith's discography with a group of Christchurch-based musicians. Don't miss this rare opportunity to hear Hamish perform in his hometown.
