You’ll learn how to transform a simple sheet of MDF into a printing block, explore basic carving techniques, apply ink, and create prints using nothing more than your hands and a spoon!

Josh will also share tips for continuing the process at home, showing you how you can keep making prints without investing in expensive specialist equipment.

All materials are provided. Just bring yourself, your ideas and clothes you don’t mind getting a little inky.

Suitable for beginners and anyone curious about printmaking.

Shared kai will be an important part of coming together, so please bring a plate to contribute to the table

FAQs

  • Why hand printing?

One of the exciting things about woodcut printing is that you don’t need a studio full of machinery to get started. A carved block, some ink, paper and a little patience can take you a long way.

Hand printing also leaves room for the unexpected. Every impression can be slightly different, with variations in pressure, ink and texture becoming part of the character of the print. Rather than aiming for perfect repetition, you’ll learn to embrace the marks and imperfections that make handmade prints unique.

  • What will participants do during this workshop?

Josh will take you through the following process step by step:

    • Design your image — explore simple ways to create an image that will translate well into a woodcut.

    • Carve your block — learn safe and effective carving techniques using hand tools to create positive and negative space.

    • Ink your design — experiment with rolling out and applying oil based printing ink.

    • Hand print your work — discover how pressure, movement and patience can produce a strong print without a printing press.

    • Pull your prints — make your own edition of prints on quality paper to take home.

    • Experiment and play — learn how small changes in pressure, ink and carving can create surprisingly different results.

  • What will participants take home?

Participants will leave with your own handmade woodcut prints, a new set of practical printmaking skills, and the confidence to continue experimenting at home.

This is an opportunity to slow down, get your hands dirty and experience the satisfying process of turning a simple carved surface into an image.
