Wed, 12 Nov, 10am - 12pm AWST

Event description

This group practical session provides an essential opportunity for beekeepers to develop the hands-on skills needed to detect Varroa mites early and confidently. Led by two of WA’s Varroa Development Officers, this interactive field session will take place in the apiary, where participants will work directly with live colonies.

Early detection is critical to slowing the spread and impact of Varroa mites. In this session, participants will learn and practice key surveillance and monitoring techniques used across Australia as part of the National Varroa Mite Management Program. The session will cover:

  • Varroa surveillance methods including alcohol wash and drone uncapping

  • Queen identification and marking

  • General hive health management techniques

  • Record keeping and reporting tips

This is a great opportunity to gain practical skills and tips to safeguard your hives and contribute to the early detection efforts that are vital to protecting WA’s thriving beekeeping industry.

This workshop is being held in a private apiary. Full address will be provided after registration.

To participate in this workshop, please bring a clean bee suit and gloves.

If you would prefer a one-on-one session in your own hive/s, please email T2M.varroa.mite@dpird.wa.gov.au to request a visit (available Tuesday to Thursday 11-13 November).
