    Event description

Get your hands on building a self-contained wicking planter full of seasonal plants! Wicking beds are a smart way to water plants from below, providing consistent damp conditions.
These self-watering systems allow water stored in the base to ‘wick’ up through the soil. Having water readily available at the roots helps healthy plant growth and reduces mildew or fungal problems. Plus, it saves you time watering the garden.

In this workshop, you will be shown how to build your own wicking bed. What you’ll learn:

    1. Understanding the Basics: Get hands-on as we kick off the workshop with an interactive session on the fundamental principles of wicking beds. Learn about water conservation, soil composition, and the science behind wicking systems. We'll discuss materials, design options, and the benefits of this sustainable gardening method.
    2. Building A Wicking Bed: Now, it's time to roll up your sleeves and get creative! With guided instruction, you'll embark on the exciting journey of constructing wicking beds. From selecting the correct container to layering the components, you'll gain practical skills to bring your garden dreams to life.
    3. Fine-Tuning and TroubleshootingAs the wicking bed takes shape, we'll focus on fine-tuning the setup for optimal performance. Learn essential maintenance tips, watering techniques, and how to troubleshoot common issues. Whether you're a seasoned gardener or a novice enthusiast, this session will equip you with the knowledge and confidence to nurture thriving plants year-round.

    Youth Offer

This workshop is available to teenagers (12 to 18 years) accompanied by mum, dad or an adult guardian who have also paid to attend the workshop.
