Hanko Stamps and Name Seals with Pei

Name seals have long history in Chinese painting and calligraphy, and although the exact origin is not known, seals are still used in modern China and Japan to authorise official documents.

But these seals are more than just a unique motif, and mark an identity, symbolic of status and culture. The size and material of a seal imply the social hierarchy of its owner. While traditionally carved on precious stones and jades, we will be carving into rubber to make our own name seals.

Come along and learn a brief history of traditional Chinese name seals, also known as hanko in Japan, and learn to design and carve your own. Pei can help you translate your name into Chinese is desired, or stick to roman characters with a suitable aesthetic.

This class is beginner friendly! No experience required.

What we will cover?

In this hands-on class, you will learn:

• A brief history of Chinese name seals and Japanese hanko
• Traditional designs and styles
• How to design your own name seals (2-4 depending on your use of space on the rubber tile)
• How to use carving tools to achieve clear designs
• How to carve with rubber

Who will be teaching?

Pei Fong is a self described lab rat (medical scientist) who specialise in Microbiology. When not playing with parasites and bacteria, Pei can be found dabbling in many of their rewarding hobbies! This includes hiking, doodling, crafting, learning a language or in gumboots tendering vines.
