    Event description

Do you want to learn how to weave with harakeke (flax)?

This one-day workshop at Hakatere Marae will be facilitated by Harakeke weaver Vicky King and cover an introduction to harakeke (flax), harvesting and preparing it for weaving, also tikanga. Once preparation of the flax is complete participants will weave a pop-up kete.

There are only 12 places available (adults only) so get in quick to secure your place. No prior experience needed.

Harakeke will be provided. You will need to BYO lunch and bring the following items if you can:

    • Scissors
    • Bobby pins  (about 50)
    • A large darning needle
    • A pin frog (if you have one - no worries if not)
    • Wooden chopping board
    • A blanket or small tarp if you wish to sit on the floor to work.
    • Any shells, paua pieces, wood etc that you may wish to use to decorate your item.   You may need to drill a hole in these so that you can attach them to your work.

This event is organised by Te Huka Tai Trust and is open to anyone of any culture & gender. The Harakeke Wānanga has been made possible thanks to funding from Lotteries.
