Event description

Do you want to learn how to weave with harakeke (flax) or extend the skills you already have?

This one-day workshop will be facilitated by Harakeke weaver Vicky King and cover a brief introduction to harakeke (flax). Participants will then weave a Kete Waikawa - a basket woven from flax, traditionally used to store food.

There are only 10 places available so get in quick to secure your place. No prior experience needed.

You can harvest your own Harakeke prior to the event - you'll need at last 16 leaves with the hard butt end left on. If you are unable to harvest your own harakeke, then Vicky can harvest for you - we'll email those registered prior to the event to get that sorted.

You will need to BYO lunch and bring the following items if you can:

  • a craft knife
  • A Large pair of sharp scissors
  • Strong plastic clothes pegs
  • A ruler
  • A pen
  • Wooden chopping board
  • A blanket or small tarp if you wish to sit on the floor to work.
  • Any shells, paua pieces, wood etc that you may wish to use to decorate your item.   You may need to drill a hole in these so that you can attach them to your work.

This event is organised by Te Huka Tai Trust and is open to anyone of any culture & gender, 16 years and over. The Harakeke Wānanga has been made possible thanks to funding from Lotteries.
