Description

Want to see some cool winter birds? This event is free and open to LGBTQIA+ folks and allies of all experience levels.

Harding’s Paddock, also known as Flinder’s Conservation Estate, is 20 minutes from Ipswich and one of South East Queensland's best winter birding locations! Throughout the dry eucalypt forest and permanent creek system, Jacky Winter, Rose Robins, and Spotted Pardalote are among the 192 species sighted on eBird. Harding's Paddock is also a cultural hub for the local First Nations people, with a dedicated bush tucker trail, yarning circle and Kup murri cooking pit.

During this walk, we will be exploring the Bush Tucker Trail and the area around the campground and carpark, but may venture off to nearby areas as we see fit on the day.

📍Find Us: We will meet outside the toilet block at Harding's Paddock, at the end of Carmichaels Road, Purga. There should be ample parking, however there is no direct public transport, so carpooling is encouraged. Google maps link here. The road into the area is unsealed and due to recent rain, does have sections that may have potholes, mud and uneven surfaces.

Accessibility: We welcome those of all ages joining us out in nature, but please note anyone under 18 must be accompanied by a trusted adult. The walk around the Bush Tucker Track is paved and has some slight inclines, but remains pram and wheelchair accessible. However, outer areas of the walk, including the outskirts of the campground, will require walking over soft grass and/or compacted gravel, or paved roads with steeper inclines.

Safety: This is a pet-free event. Adequate sun protection and insect repellent are recommended.  Please be mindful as you walk due to the presence of snakes, ticks and leeches, and bring enclosed walking shoes.

Facilities: The site has wheelchair accessible toilet facilities, as well as shaded areas and picnic tablets to relax. There is no potable water supply, nor eating facilities, so please bring plenty of food and drink with you.

Please Bring: Hat and SPF sunscreen, insect repellent, snacks and plenty of water, enclosed and comfortable walking shoes; binoculars or a camera with long-range zoom are highly recommended. Bring a picnic blanket/chair and arts/craft/reading/other activities if you wish!

We acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the Purga area, the Yuggera and Ugarapul Peoples and their Elders. We pay our respect to all First Nations folks in our community, and invite all birders to walk with mindfulness and respect.
