Harvey Blues and The Keitels featuring Charlotte McLean
Event description
The Keitels came together in July 2022 during Harvey’s last year of studying at The Jazz Music Institute; the intention was to showcase a genre of jazz called Soul Jazz. This short-lived genre started in the mid fifties and continued up until the late sixties when jazz fusion became popular. It combines elements of jazz/soul/gospel and blues. Typically the groups would have been organ trios with organist playing the bass parts on pedals with their feet, but Harvey wanted to have a more expanded group which included an actual bass player and also a percussion player as well as a sax and keyboard player.
This music is groove based where the element of improvisation is extensively explored and each soloist is completely free to play with out no restrictions, sometimes over a one chord groove. Also Harvey wanted to add a vocalist to expand the group’s sound even more moving into soul/jazz /funk as well as playing instrumentals.
The Keitels play songs from artists such as Boogaloo Joe Jones, George Benson and Horace Silver. They currently have a monthly residency at The Bearded Lady in Brisbane’s West End.
The group consists of
Chris Harvey - Guitar
Paula Girvan - Keyboards
Casey Glennen - Bass
