Event description

Health Consumers' Council WA was launched by the Minister for Health in 1994 as an independent voice for the community on health policy, planning and decision making and to provide a recognised presence for health consumers. Since then, we have championed and supported thousands of people to assert their rights and have their say on health.

There have been many successes, including the fact that consumer and community voices are now present in many spaces that they were not 30 years ago.

But there is much more to be done.

In 2024, our 30th anniversary year, we are renewing our commitment to ensuring a strong presence for consumers and community members in all decisions relating to the health of Western Australians.

In Rebel Health: A Field Guide to the Patient-Led Revolution in Medical Care (on sale 13 February from The MIT Press), Susannah Fox draws on twenty years of tracking the expert networks of patients, survivors, and caregivers who have come of age between the cracks of the health care system to offer a way forward.

Covering everything from diabetes to Motor Neurone Disease to Moebius Syndrome to chronic disease management, Fox taps into the wisdom of these individuals, learns their ways, and fuels the rebel alliance that is building up our collective capacity for better health. Rebel Health shows how the next wave of health innovation will come from the front lines of this patient-led revolution.

In this session, join Clare Mullen, Executive Director of Health Consumers' Council and Susannah Fox in conversation as we hear from Susannah about what inspired her to write this book, and what she sees the opportunities are for this patient-led revolution, and we discuss the implications for the health consumer movement in WA and Australia.

Tickets are free. You will be offered the chance to make a donation - all funds generated go to support HCC's work championing consumer rights in health.

This session will be held online via Zoom. If you have any questions about this workshop, please contact us at info@hconc.org.au or call 08 9221 3422
