Event description

Background

People with low literacy are rarely considered in the development of health literacy content. Currently 44% of the adult Australian population do not have the literacy to manage a range of day to day reading tasks. When it comes to health literacy 60% of adults do not have the health literacy to manage a range of health information.

Also consider when any person attends ER, or receives a complex or life limiting diagnosis or is a person who does not usually engage in health services.........At some point every person is likely to be a vulnerable reader in their health journey.

For almost 20 years Easy English content has been developed in Australia. Few people are aware of Easy English, or its applicability across all the population. Easy English is developed to an average of grade 1.6 reading skill development, yet is adult content. It is supported with clear and specific images to support the text with a clear and uncluttered layout. Check out lots of examples here https://accesseasyenglish.com....  This compares with Easy Read development, which is descibed as plain language with pictures and has an average of grade 6.5 reading skill development. This is not accessible for people with low health literacy.

Join Cathy Basterfield, international leading consultant and developer of Easy English or in other languages Easy {your language} in discussing what must be created for the vast majority of our population with low health literacy.

Hear what different people with low health literacy say about having access to Easy English information on their health journey.
