Heritage Hīkoi - The Story of Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei
Event description
From paramount tribal leaders of the central Tāmaki isthmus and founders of Auckland city, to an impoverished, nearly landless collective of hapū, protesting the dispossession of their land at Bastion Point '77-'78. Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei have literally risen from the ashes to become an economic powerhouse and one of the leading visionaries for the regeneration of our landscape and waterways around the Waitematā Harbour.
Come and enjoy a rare opportunity to hear their story as we hīkoi (walk) around their Ōrākei marae complex and surrounding sites of significance.
Led by Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei cultural leader - Kingi Makoare, we will begin at Pourewa Community Hub, the flourishing nursery, gardens and honey production site on Kepa Road, pass through the new property developments surrounding Kupe St, and make our way through the papa kāinga (village) of Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei and complete our journey at Ōkahu Bay, site of the original village.
This is Part 2 of a two part heritage hīkoi and hui for city centre community leaders as part of a community building initiative by Aaiotanga Trust and supported by a number of community partners with special acknowledgment to the Waitematā Local Board.
In September and November 2023, we had two groups come together for Part 1, to learn about our city centre landscape, its stories and our inspirational founding story as a city. We celebrated a forward thinking vision of partnership, not just between us as a diverse group of peoples and cultures but also partnership with our landscape and waters to provide wellbeing for all.
Walking preparation:
This hīkoi will cover a distance of approximately 2.8km and is mostly a flat route with a descent to Ōkahu Bay at the end. This takes approximately 60 minutes at a gentle pace, but we will spend time in different locations along the way, a number of which will have seating opportunities.
The majority of this route is suitable for mobility scooters or wheelchairs, please let us know if you will be using either of these.
For those not able or not comfortable walking this distance, we will have a van transport option available. Please indicate if you need this when acquiring your ticket.
For those that park at Pourewa Community Hub at the start of the hīkoi, the van will make trips back up the hill to return you to your vehicle, but be aware this will take some time. Some may prefer to arrange a shared vehicle type of transport.
We recommend bringing a poncho or umbrella in case of light rain. Please bring your own water bottle and sun protection.
