Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga hosts this self-driving tour which takes you to two early homesteads in Selwyn: Steventon and Strathlachlan. The property owners will provide tours which include the history of the buildings, gardens and past owners.

Two seemingly unrelated properties, both built in the 1800s: one of wood, the other brick. From the outside miles apart, yet on this tour you will learn why and how they are closely connected through history, coincidence, and people.
1. Steventon Homestead began as a cottage in 1855, but has grown over the years, Learn about connections to Jane Austen, Lady Barker…and coal. Tour the house, outbuildings and gardens, Enjoy a cuppa and the huge Rhododendrons in full bloom.
2. BYO picnic lunch to enjoy at South Malvern School. Built in 1882-83, and recently restored, the school was once the centre of a small industrial town. Includes a history lesson and displays.
3. Strathlachlan Homestead was built in 1882 and wonderfully restored after the earthquakes. Tour this impressive house, gardens, and beautiful stables. Delicious Devonshire tea included in your ticket to finish off your day out.
