“A stage presence only matched by the clarity of her voice” James Morrison AU
Based in Paris since 2017, British/Australian vocalist Hetty Kate began her music career in the vibrant Melbourne jazz scene, where she was mentored by some of Australia’s most cherished jazz musicians. Alongside her natural musicality, clear tone, and impeccable timing, it’s her warmth and razor-sharp wit that truly set her apart, blending poise and humor with a deep love for both music and audience.
Hetty has been touring internationally for almost two decades, gracing stages large and small from New Zealand to New York, from Paris to Prague. She has appeared at the Melbourne International Jazz Festival, the Wangaratta Jazz Festival, as well as international festivals in Asia, North America, and Europe. Career highlights include a long tenure as the featured vocalist with Australian jazz luminary James Morrison, performing in his various bands and projects, including his acclaimed symphonic concert ‘The A to Z of Jazz,’ which toured with eight symphonies across Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, and Czechia.
No stranger to stage or screen, Hetty portrayed actress Ava Gardner in an original musical written by Eric McCusker (Mondo Rock) and even played herself in French director Hervé Hadmar's television series Romance, aired on France 2.
For this intimate concert—her first in town since headlining the Castlemaine Jazz Festival in 2017—Hetty will be joined by two of her close friends and exceptional musicians, guitarist Sam Lemann and bassist Ben Hanlon. Both are passionate song-lovers who bring a joyful, captivating presence to the stage.
Guitarist Sam Lemann has been a friend, mentor, and musical accomplice to Hetty since the beginning of her career. Together, they formed the successful quartet The Irwell Street String Band, which produced two popular albums, A Late Brunch on Irwell Street and 11:60pm. This sparkling string group received airplay on BBC Radio 2 and invitations to jazz festivals across Australia. Sam’s captivating style, blending swinging rhythms with a country-tinged, south-of-the-border sound, has made him a sought-after musician, performing with the likes of Grace Knight, Andy Baylor, and The B# Big Band.
Bassist Ben Hanlon began his career firmly rooted in the classical world, securing a permanent position with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. As he branched out into jazz, Ben quickly became one of Melbourne’s top-call bassists, regularly performing with artists such as James Morrison, Joe Chindamo, and Paul Grabowsky.
Join us for a warm, welcoming, and masterful evening of classics and curiosities from the American Songbook and beyond.
