We all belong in Brighton! We are fundraising here to cover rent to keep our asylum seeking friends in Brighton. The Home Office is trying to force refugees out of our city. It plans to close the hotel where around 15 single women and families seeking asylum are currently housed, and scatter them away from the city. Including to towns where far right racists are attacking refugees. So we, a coalition of community groups and Brighton residents, are launching this campaign to get them in safe, stable housing in Brighton. Funds raised here will go directly to paying rent, bills and other basic living costs for our asylum seeking neighbours in need. We are demanding that the City Council steps up and helps us find permanent homes. We also call on all Brighton residents to help us provide short term emergency accommodation. Together we can do this. The hotel residents are our neighbours. Their lives, friends and support networks are here with us in Brighton. Babies have been born here, friendships made. They are part of our community. We will not let them be scattered to unknown locations across the UK, including to towns where refugees are under attack. At a time where ugly racism is on the rise again, we will defend our neighbours and make sure Brighton lives up to its status as a “Sanctuary City”. Our city, with all its empty investment properties and AirBnBs, cannot be too “rich” to shelter those in need.
