Hiring and Keeping: Tips for creating and maintaining an inclusive workplace for individuals with disabilities

Workshop Description: 

Disability inclusion can only happen when we consider who is at the table, who isn't, how the table was built and why. To create a truly inclusive workplace, we must unlearn traditional workforce structures and practices and rewire the way we think and work. This means pausing and re-examining what we prioritize in our organizational values and workflow.

From recruitment, to the interview process, to hiring and training practices, this interactive workshop will offer participants resources for:

• Examining workplace practices with an accessibility lens

• Practical tips to improve internal and workforce accessibility in workplace practices

• Empowering participants to create change in their workplace practices

• Resources to support their institution’s accessibility journey

The workshop will include movement around the Museum, small group activities, and lots of conversation. We'll end the day with a panel featuring local Columbus artists, professionals, and business owners.

Presenters: 

Megan Fitze, Executive Director, Art Possible Ohio- Megan previously served as the Director of Programs for Art Possible Ohio, and has worked for the Massillon Museum as Education and Outreach Manager where she co-established an accessibility committee, created audio descriptive and sensory tours, and developed a sensory room. Before Massillon Museum, Megan worked with Dublin Arts Council, the Columbus Metropolitan Library, and Global Gallery, a Fair Trade non-profit, in Columbus, Ohio. 

Joanie Calem, Artist, Performer, + Educator- Joanie Calem has been a performing musician, music teacher, and storyteller since 1983. With a background in music, special education, and community building, Joanie teaches and performs using multiple learning styles to facilitate inclusive settings and make sure that everyone can access the material being shared. She is deeply aware of the many non-academic factors that can impede learning: Sensory Processing Disorder, Autism Spectrum Disorder, PTSD, ACES, etc. and Joanie adapts her presentation to reach the people before her in any particular moment.

Participants may bring their own lunches, or pre-select a $12 **boxed lunch provided by the Museum. Select your lunch during the registration process. Purchasing a lunch is not required, it is optional. If you do not bring your own lunch or pre-order a boxed lunch, you will have the option to purchase food at the Museum cafe. Click here to review the cafe menu.

Organization Registration (Up to 3 registrants): $45

Parking will be available on-site in the Museum lot. Participants will receive a sticker to comp any parking costs.
