Become a historical detective and follow the fascinating journey of William Dawes — from his arrival in 1788 as an astronomer on the First Fleet to his lasting legacy at Dawes Point, the site of the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
Discover how Dawes built two observatories near today’s city centre decades before Sydney Observatory, and explore his complex life through stories of ambition, setbacks and surprising connections to modern Sydney.
About the presenter: Richard de Grijs is a passionate public speaker on astronomy, astrophysics and maritime history. He is a professor of astrophysics at Macquarie University and Executive Director of the International Space Science Institute - Beijing. His achievements include awards from the Australian Academy of Science, University of Canterbury and Macquarie University, as well as recognition for his contributions to history and medical humanities.
