Holiday Spirit(s) - Ghost Story Workshop
Event description
Since the 1800s, ghost stories have become a common part of the Christmas season, but the Victorians don’t have a monopoly on ghosts on a cold winter’s night. Throughout history, and even before Christmas was Christmas, people would congregate at the darkest time of the year to tell stories around the fire about things that scared them, and things that inspired them. In this writing workshop, we’ll take the idea of holiday and winter ghost stories and put our own spin on it.
While the tradition of holiday ghost stories was made popular by the Victorians at Christmastime, our workshop will focus on diversifying viewpoints, subject matter, and beliefs. Join us for spooky, chilling tales of the bleak midwinter, and be sure to bring your editor’s cap to help your fellow writers. There’s no place like home for the holidays…unless that home is haunted.

This workshop will go a little bit differently than the ghosts of Write Pittsburgh workshops past.Â
Participants will be given a list of writing prompts ahead of time. They will then be asked to choose a prompt and start writing. Finally, they’ll bring their partial or full (short) piece to the workshop to receive feedback from the other participants who will be doing exactly the same thing.Â
Feedback will be kept respectful, helpful, and most of all: kind. Once participants have had a chance to make changes, they will have the option for their work (either the complete piece or in an excerpted form) to be published on the Write Pittsburgh website.
