From Hollow Words to Hollow Deeds
Description
From hollow words to hollow deeds
Help us create 11 new homes for local wildlife this breeding season.
Coal Point’s wildlife has a housing shortage.
The loss of large, old trees across our neighbourhood also means the loss of tree hollows — vital breeding and shelter sites for birds, gliders, microbats and other wildlife. Protecting the hollow-bearing trees we still have must always come first, but once an old tree and its hollows are gone, replacing that habitat naturally can take more than a century.
That’s why CPPA wants to act now.
Our goal is to raise $4,000 to purchase and professionally install 11 supplementary wildlife hollows in our local area this breeding season.
We plan to purchase five small, five medium and one large hollow, providing different-sized habitat for a range of local hollow-dependent wildlife. The hollows normally cost $1,580, but thanks to a generous 30% not-for-profit discount from Mountains for Wildlife, CPPA can purchase all 11 for $1,106.
The remaining funds will go towards professional installation and associated project costs. Installation matters: hollows need to be safely positioned at appropriate heights and locations, taking into account the needs of different wildlife species and the surrounding habitat.
Part of a bigger plan
These 11 hollows are our opportunity to make a difference now, but they are also part of a longer-term vision.
CPPA and the Rotary Club of Toronto Sunrise are collaborating on a grant application for Hollows for Habitat: A Community-Led Habitat Restoration Pilot. If successful, the project will begin in 2027 and bring together Rotary, CPPA Landcare, TreeHouse Ecology and local landholders to build the skills and capacity to create supplementary habitat locally.
There is already strong community interest, with 24 local landholders volunteering as potential hollow hosts.
We can’t grow an old hollow-bearing tree in a month. We can protect the ones we still have and provide supplementary habitat where hollows have already been lost.
Every donation, large or small, will bring us closer to getting 11 new wildlife homes into the trees this breeding season.
Our goal: $4,000
Let’s turn hollow words into hollow deeds.
