Hollows as Homes Project + Christmas Party
Event description
📅 Saturday 13 December 2025 — 8:00am to 10:30am (picnic to follow)
📍 Gegedzerick Travelling Stock Reserve, next to Berridale Cemetery
Celebrate the end of a wonderful birding year with Birds of the Snowy Monaro and Upper Snowy Landcare at this special Christmas event! 🎄
We’ll begin the morning with a guided walk through Gegedzerick Travelling Stock Reserve, one of our ongoing Home Birding Sites.
Upper Snowy Landcare will lead a tour of their inspiring “Hollow Hogs” project — showing how they’re creating artificial tree hollows to support the many native birds that rely on these vital nesting spaces.
You’ll learn about:
🌳 The importance of natural hollows and how long they take to form
🐦 Which local bird species depend on hollows for breeding
🪵 How habitat restoration and creative “Hollow Homes” are helping our wildlife
After the walk, stay on for a festive picnic Christmas Party — bring something to share, your picnic rug or chair, and enjoy some relaxed bird chatter with fellow nature lovers.
We’ll also conduct one of our regular Birdata surveys during the morning to record which birds are active on site.
What to Bring
Hat, water, sturdy shoes
Binoculars and notebook (optional)
Smartphone with Birdata app if you'd like to record a survey (or assist group leader)
A plate to share for morning tea or picnic brunch
Christmas cheer! 🎅
