Event description

10:00 - 4:00. We will meet at the Hearth at 10:00 am and either car pool or take public transportation to the Getty Center. We will visit several exhibits and the Central Garden with a planned 3:00 pm departure.

While the Getty Center grounds and offerings are expansively varied, our primary goal is to view holograms and experimental photography via two PST ART: Art & Science Collide exhibits curated by the Getty’s Virginia Heckert - Sculpting with Light: Contemporary Artists and Holography; and Abstracted Light: Experimental Photography. The collections feature work that demonstrates the dynamic interplay between still photography and experimental film, (featured photography artists: László Moholy-Nagy, Francis Bruguière, Man Ray, Tōyō Miyatake, Asahachi Kono, and Jaromír Funke, and Thomas Wilfred) and the companion exhibition examines holograms that produce the magical illusion of three-dimensional objects floating in space as made possible by the 1960’s era invention of laser technology and promoted by the C Project to 1990’s contemporary artists of note including John Baldessari, Louise Bourgeois, Ed Ruscha, and Matthew Schroeder.

While the installations are sited inside the West Pavilion, we recommend you. bring sun block/hats if you’d like to explore the ever-changing Central Garden, created/designed to be a permanent piece of living art for the museum’s collection by the artist, Robert Irwin.

There are many food options at the Getty Center including everything from grab and go carts to fine dining. We’ll have light snacks to share but recommend you bring a water bottle and munchies keep your blood sugar levels even. Information about dining options here: https://www.visitcalifornia.co...

This video demonstrates what it would be like to create art using light. In this film still, Francis Bruguière draws in pure light on cut and folded paper to create a complex image that conveys both space and depth. Originating from Bruguière abstract film produced in England, Light Rhythms demonstrates 1920s avant-garde photographers’ great interest in abstract imagery created through experimental light exposures.
