Event description

This June and July CRU will be hosting a 2-part Crucial Conversations series on the topic of Having My Own Home.

We all want our Home to be a place of sanctuary and security- somewhere we can be ourselves and become the people we want to be. For many of us this will mean moving out of the family home.

But for people with disabilities and their family the idea of moving out of the home can feel like a far-off dream. Even when the planning is done there are challenges and obstacles that can get in the way.

The aim of this conversation series is to spark ideas, share with others and lean into some of the questions and concerns you may have when it comes to thinking about a home of your own.

Join us this June and/or July for one of both of these crucial conversations which will be accompanied by a light meal. Arrive at 5.30pm for a 6pm start, finishing at 8pm.

Session 1 Home: Facing the challenges and finding a way forward- navigating roadblocks, barriers and bridges - Wednesday 18th June.

When it comes to moving out of the family home today people face questions and challenges with time, money, housing shortages, funding, energy and uncertainty often being very real problems that can get in the way.

These roadblocks, barriers and fears are not going to go away- so let's come together to look at what we can do about them.

Session 2 Home: Connections and collaborations- what can we achieve when we work together?  Wednesday 16th July.

Connecting with others who can understand your vision for yourself or your family member with disability can help you to build momentum, develop ideas, learn from others and reflect and refine your goals, vision, values, and strategies.

In this conversation we will look at and talk about some of the different ways we can learn together and collaborate to strengthen and resource ourselves, our community and each other.

This session will be relevant to people with disabilities, their families and supporters who may have been thinking about how they can move into a home they can call their own and would like to explore this topic with others.
