Homeschool Geography & Science Fieldwork Day: Oatley Park
Description
Join us for a hands-on day of outdoor learning at Oatley Park, where Geography and Science come together through practical fieldwork, exploration and discovery.
Students will investigate Sydney's sandstone bushland and ecosystems using real fieldwork equipment to collect data, test environmental conditions and explore how living things interact with their environment.
Designed for Stage 3 and Stage 4 homeschool students, this excursion provides an opportunity to learn outdoors, work alongside other homeschool students and experience Geography and Science in a real-world setting.
What we'll do
Investigate Sydney's Hawkesbury Sandstone landscape and how it was formed
Use topographic maps and field sketching to explore landscapes and landforms
Measure biotic and abiotic factors using scientific field equipment to understand how ecosystems function
Examine plant adaptations that help species survive in bushland environments
Search for insects, spiders and other bushland invertebrates using identification charts to explore biodiversity and the role of decomposers in ecosystems
Investigate how people have changed and managed the environment
Collect and interpret real-world environmental data
Meet and learn alongside other homeschool students
Why families love fieldwork
Many students learn best when they can move, explore and experience concepts in the real world.
This excursion provides an engaging alternative to desk-based learning and gives students the opportunity to investigate the environment firsthand while spending the day outdoors.
Rather than simply reading about the natural environment, students will collect data, make observations, use field equipment and investigate real-world environmental questions for themselves.
All fieldwork equipment and worksheets are provided, and the program is led by an experienced Auseco educator who guides students through the day's activities and investigations.
Geography & Science fieldwork
Fieldwork provides students with the opportunity to apply geographical and scientific skills in a real-world environment.
Throughout the day, students will collect observations and data, make measurements, use field equipment, identify organisms and investigate relationships between living things and their environment.
The investigations support NSW Geography and Science learning and provide real-world experiences that can be incorporated into related homeschool learning activities.
