Description

Family Homicide in New Zealand: Patterns and Trends

Anthropology Lecture Series 2022

Any homicide, but particularly homicides between family members, is alarming.  Understanding the patterns and trends of these tragedies is important to determine risk factors and develop appropriate interventions.  Analyses of spousal and parent-offspring homicides using a data archive (the Homicide Report from Stuff) of all the known cases in New Zealand between 2003 to 2019 will be presented.  Patterns in homicide will be compared to other rich Western countries.  ‘Male sexual proprietariness’ is a dominant theme in spousal homicides and New Zealand has one of the largest Cinderella Effects (excess risk to stepchildren) yet documented. Quantitative results will be complemented with detailed qualitative data.
