Honeyland is a visually stunning, multi award-winning documentary that carries strong relational values. Set in a remote Macedonian village with no running water or electricity, it features one of the last female wild bee keepers in Europe. “Half for us, half for the bees” is the approach taken by Hatizde as she collects honey in a way that’s been practiced for many generations before her, guarding a fragile balance. This is threatened when a nomadic family with seven children moves in next door and attempts to produce more honey to sell, faster.
Did you know?
- We need bees for food security, biodiversity and ecosystem health.
- Nearly two-thirds of Australia’s agricultural production benefits from bee pollination.
- The bee population is declining. Destruction of their natural habitat (including from fires and other climate change events), intensive farming practices, pests and diseases are just some of the complex reasons why.
- There are many actions we can take to improve this situation and we’ll share details about some of these.
This Eco Film Club discussion is facilitated by Randwick local, Blanche De Winter (PURE Communications).
