Event description

This is a free story event running as part of the Premier’s Reading Challenge, in collaboration with Perth City Farm. It is suitable for children aged 12 - 18.

Join local author Rachel Watts for a reading from her award-winning novel Survival, a dystopian work about love set against the backdrop of economic and environmental crisis. There will be a chance to talk about the reading and other fiction the group loves, then we’ll balance the dystopia with some hope, exploring the grounds of Perth City Farm. Perth City Farm is a 28 year old community urban farm created from a degraded industrial site. This thriving urban oasis grows lots of food, hosts chickens and ducks, and brings the community together through sustainability education and events. This event is a chance for young people to connect over the fiction they love, discover new local works to read, and experience a living community that is actively engaged with the climate crisis.

About ‘Survival’: The world has suffered economic collapse and multiple environmental crises. In a flooded city, Ava Murasaki is searching for her activist sister Sophia. Meanwhile, Valerie Newlin lives in the secure complex of the Scylla Corporation, the world's only remaining multinational. There, she finds evidence of something horrifying in the Corporation medical research data. Set in a searingly real near-future, Survival is a story of what people will face for those they love.
