Classics at Picton, a not-for-profit organisation affiliated with The Federated Music Clubs of Australia NSW Council, Inc. Founded in the early ‘90s by the late Laurel Silm of Cedar Creek Orchard, outstanding Australian pianist, Rachel Valler O.A.M., and the Picton Probus Club. Rachel introduced local audiences to a huge variety of music and to the very best soloists – both instrumentalists and singers. For next 15 years, the concerts were held in the Estonian Hall and promoted as “Classics at Thirlmere”. In 2004, the Yamaha C2 Grand piano was purchased due to the fundraising efforts of the Probus Club and presented to Wollondilly Shire Council and was housed in Picton Shire Hall. “Classics at Thirlmere” then became “Classics at Picton”. The next 10 years saw a committee of about 7 volunteers, steered initially by John List, organising usually 5 concerts each year. The Wollondilly Shire Hall has a warm acoustic and an intimate atmosphere. Other venues used are St Marks Church and the Masonic Temple – both in Picton and the keynote for these concerts is creating a pleasant music experience and enjoying the company of fine musicians . The objectives of “Classics at Picton” are to organise classical music concerts and to encourage and support student musicians, particularly those starting their studies. It has funded Master classes and tutoring for local music students, provided rehearsal assistance and performance opportunities for aspiring young Wollondilly musicians, and helped establish and support Picton Strings.
