Chenrezig Institute is a Buddhist centre and retreat for meditation, study, and spiritual growth.
Chenrezig Institute was established in 1974, being the first Tibetan Buddhist Centre in Australia and one of the oldest in the west.
Located in the hinterland of the Sunshine Coast, Queensland, the place has flourished into a dedicated facility for Buddhist education and practice. The property and land were consecrated in September 1974 as a place where sentient beings can come to learn Dharma, meditate, purify and collect merits.
Our centre is home to a Tibetan teacher, resident nuns and monks, and a community of lay students, volunteers, and guests. A range of Buddhist and secular programs are offered, through which people’s minds and hearts can be transformed for the benefit of others.
Many great Buddhist masters including His Holiness the Dalai Lama, many rinpoches, yogis and Tibetan and western sangha, have been hosted here while teaching their profound wisdom, insights and practices on the Buddhist path.
As well as our beautiful meditation hall, the very heart of our centre, we also offer a vegetarian cafe, extensive library, art studio, our Garden of Enlightenment memorial gardens, and extensive rainforest grounds, all of which are open to the general public. A range of simple accommodation is available for those wishing to stay.
Chenrezig Institute was the first centre (outside the Indian sub-continent) of the international Tibetan Buddhist organisation, The Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition (FPMT) an organisation founded by two amazing Tibetan masters, Lama Thubten Yeshe and Lama Zopa Rinpoche.
