When was the last time you had a meaningful dialogue with others in your community about personal experiences related to poverty? Poverty in our communities is linked to barriers like incarceration, addiction, mental illness, lack of education, and racial inequity. Beyond these barriers are human beings.
At the Table is an event designed to spark curiosity, deepen understanding, and foster connections. Think Tank’s Change Leader Alliance is hosting its third annual At the Table, encouraging people from diverse backgrounds to converse and learn from each other in a supportive environment. This year, Think Tank is partnering with several organizations to host At the Table in locations across the nation, impacting up to 400 people.
Attendees can engage in 20-minute one-on-one or small group conversations with local Change Leaders. These speakers draw upon their personal experiences to help inform and improve their community.
This event aims to create a positive space for dialogue on challenging topics, break down stereotypes, and celebrate the strength and wisdom of so many who have lived experience in poverty.
About Communities of Transformation: The mission of Communities of Transformation is to move families from surviving to thriving by developing personal leadership skills and building authentic relationships. The typical North American definition of poverty is a lack of financial resources. Because of this perspective, many churches and organizations seek to address poverty by giving financial assistance or material goods such as food and clothing. While this assistance may help alleviate suffering temporarily, it has not proven to be an effective method for lifting people out of poverty. COT intentionally moves away from a transactional approach to poverty alleviation to a holistic and relational approach. COT defines poverty as a lack of resources. These resources may be financial, relational, spiritual, physical, intellectual, or a combination. This holistic view of poverty drives our work. Each COT site provides its participants with the tools and the supportive relationships needed for them to identify their strengths, build their resource base, and achieve self-identified goals. COT provides under-resourced families with the information, skills, and support they need to create a new future story. COT seeks to walk WITH, not do FOR.
