Curlew (Gill Higgins, she/her) is a celtic alt-folk multi instrumentalist. She incorporates acoustic string, wind and percussive instruments, field recordings, synthesisers and loop pedals. With ethereal vocals and grounding drones, she explores the interaction of nature and machine, and the waythat music can unite strangers.
Having played as a session musician alongside some of Scotland's finest, including Stuart Braithwaite (Mogwai), Audrey Tait (Franz Ferdinand), Johnny Scott (Chvrches); and her writing being awarded BBC Scotland Record of note (Roddy Hart) with her band CLR theory; Evolution is the first solo release from Gill Higgins, under her moniker, Curlew.
Evolution is a culmination of her past life training as a Plastic Reconstruction Surgeon in the NHS, her scientific research and her experiences of musicianship and production. It was created during improvisations in the UK's first electronic musical instrument library; the Glasgow Library of Synthesised Sound (GLOSS).
“it is a nigh on silent packed audience that is hooked as she skilfully and beautifully blends layers of vocal and music through use of loop pedals...her set is a bewitching one” Geoff Shaw, Resound
Since her first solo show in 2023, she has supported The Bluebells and The Twilight Sad, and played on tour with Honeyblood, Andrew Wasylyk/Tommy Perman and Carla J Easton. The Earth Chapter of her Evolution soundscape was featured in the Glasgow Botanic Garden's, she played the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and she has an upcoming show as featured artist at the Pianodrome.
